Who keeps a file on you
Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are the three most people know about. They are not the only ones. 62 companies keep consumer files that can be sold to a landlord, an employer, an insurer or a bank — and each of them has its own address for a dispute.
Where this comes from. This is the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s List of Consumer Reporting Companies, 2025 edition, reorganized so you can find one company on a phone instead of scrolling a 44-page PDF. Every detail below — the address, the phone number, whether the company gives a free report, whether it will freeze your file — is what that edition says. Retrieved September 11, 2026.
What that means for you. Nobody here has telephoned these companies. The CFPB publishes this list once a year and companies move, merge and get bought. If you are mailing something that matters, check the address on the company’s own site first, and keep a copy of whatever you send.
Why there are so many
Most of these are specialty consumer reporting companies. They do not sell a general credit report; they sell one slice of your history to one kind of buyer — your rental record to landlords, your bounced checks to banks, your prescription history to insurers, your claims history to car insurers. You usually find out one exists at the worst possible moment: the application is declined and the letter names a company you have never heard of.
That letter is the useful part. When a company takes adverse action against you based on a consumer report, it has to tell you which company supplied it, and you are entitled to a free copy of that report from that company. The general once-a-year entitlement is at 15 U.S.C. § 1681j(a)(1)(A), and the one that follows a denial is at § 1681j(b). Those are the two doors into any company on this page.

What to do with this
If a company on this list is holding something wrong about you, the route is the same one the rest of this site describes: get the report, write down precisely what is inaccurate, dispute it in writing, and keep a record of what you sent and when.
